Elementary Math Game: How To Play 'What Comes Next?'

Continue practicing math skills outside of school with the “What Comes Next?” pattern game. This game, played in Corlears’ Kindergarten class, doesn’t require many materials and is quick to set up. Our Kindergarten Teacher, Laurie, tells you how to get started.

Materials

  • 4 small cups

  • Small objects of varying colors, shapes or sizes such as:

    • Buttons

    • Lego bricks

    • Coins

    • Chips or games pieces

Directions

  1. Ask your child to cover their eyes. Make an AB pattern with 12 small objects
  2. Hide the last 4 chips underneath a cup.
  3. Then invite your child to look at your pattern. Ask your child, “What’s my pattern?”
  4. Ask your child to guess what should be under the first cup, and then reveal it. Continue until your child has guessed all 4 cups.
  5. Now it’s their turn! As you and your child take turns creating patterns, encourage them to try additional patterns other then AB (Red, yellow), such as ABC (Red, yellow, blue) or ABB (Small, big, big).
